Music Appreciation

(MUL 2010)

Dr. Joanne Kampiziones-Ying

 Faculty Introduction

Welcome to Music Appreciation! I am Dr. Joanne Kampiziones-Ying, music professor at Broward College's North Campus and look forward to working online with you in MUL 2010. I've taught at Broward College's North Campus for five years and teach a variety of courses ranging from online, blended, to face-to-face instructional formats. Prior to my appointment at Broward College, I taught at Coker College, in South Carolina, as Assistant Professor of Music and Coordinator of the piano and music theory areas. I received my bachelors' and master's degrees from the University of South Carolina and my Doctor of Musical Arts Degree from the University of Miami.
This online course surveys several centuries of western music (Middle Ages to Twentieth Century). I trust you will appreciate the evolving styles and changes in musical culture and learn the differences each era has to offer.

Course Description
Beginning with the fundamentals of music and continuing to the various time periods and genres of music, you will be exposed to a diverse selection of musical styles and subject matter that incorporates the benefits and advantages of on-line instruction.

This is a course for non-music majors, designed to develop a basic music vocabulary, establish critical listening skills, and survey the evolution of Western music within a framework of world cultures.

Methods of Instruction
Throughout the semester, you will be required to complete activities and assignments, participate in discussions in an online learning environment, and take two on-campus proctored exams, the midterm and the final.  Please refer to the following dates for the on campus proctored exams:
  • Session II Midterm:  Thursday-Sunday, 5/29-6/1, 2014
  • Session II Final:  Thursday-Sunday, 6/19-6/22, 2014

The proctored midterm and final exams may be taken at any of the two Broward College e-Testing centers of your choice (North or Central), based on the dates of the exams and the days/times the e-Testing centers are open. More information on each testing center may be found at the below links links:

On-Campus Proctored Exams

Off-Campus Alternate Testing Options:
Off-Site Testing through Proctor U:
Proctor U is a new service that allows students to complete their assessment at any location while still ensuring the academic integrity of the exam for the institution. Using almost any web cam and computer, you can take exams at home, at work, or anywhere you have internet access. To learn more about Proctor U, please visit their website at http://www.proctoru.comIf you choose to use Proctor U, these arrangements MUST be made and approved by me within the first week of class.

Off-Site Testing for Broward College Students through the National College Testing Association (NCTA) locations:
If you live outside of Broward County, Florida, and cannot come to BC to use one of the e-Testing Centers, you can arrange to take your test elsewhere under the supervision of an approved proctor; that is, someone authorized by BC to administer the test. These arrangements MUST be made and approved by me within the first week of class.

Go to the NCTA web site at http://www.ncta-testing.org/cctc/find.php. Click on the state where you want to take the test. From the city-by-city list of testing locations in that state, select the site most convenient for you. This will give you a page with contact information, testing hours, fees, directions, and other details. You will be responsible for any fees the testing center might charge.
